Welcome to this second edition of our night watch dedicated to the Australian Open 2025. A brief overview of everything that happened during the German night while you were sleeping.
The Rod Laver Arena was inaugurated by Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin. One is a former Australian Open winner, while Gauff previously won the US Open. Although Kenin is no longer in the form of his best years, his style of play can still cause problems for Gauff. The young American has readjusted her serve over the past year, as we discussed in our podcast. However, this phase still remains a work in progress for her. Nevertheless, she showed great control in the rest of her game, winning the match with a solid score of 6-3, 6-3.
Iga Swiatek had to face a meeting that seemed difficult on paper, even though no one told her. The illustrious Pole, seeded number 2, won with confidence and advanced to the second round.
Laura Siegemund met American Hailey Baptiste in her first round. Baptiste is known for her powerful play and excellent ball touch, but has yet to break through to the next level. The match started on an equal footing, but Baptiste took the upper hand by showing a higher intensity of play, winning the first set 6-4. Siegemund had to work harder to stay in contention during the second set, but she was more consistent and made fewer errors, while Baptiste struggled with her serve. After more than three hours of fighting, Siegemund won in three sets, paving the way for a clash with Qinwen Zheng.
Stefanos Tsitsipas inherited a tough first round against Alex Michelsen, a promising young American with excellent serving and great court presence. Although Tsitsipas has reached the semi-finals at least four times here, he has not shown any real marked progress in the last eighteen months. Unfortunately for him, he lost the first set and never really gave the impression of being able to turn the tide of the match. Michelsen, with a solid serve, sure groundstrokes and impressive returns, was able to set his pace. He ultimately won the match in four sets, advancing to the second round where he will face either James McCabe or Martin Landaluce.
