The Cancilleria of Venezuela ordered this Tuesday the governments of the Netherlands, France and Italy to “limit to three” the number of diplomats accredited in each of their embassies, within 48 hours. This decision comes because of what it describes as “hostile behavior” and support for “extremist groups”.
The Bolivarian Government will continue to take the necessary measures, in accordance with international law, to guarantee its stability, sovereignty and the path to peace and prosperity that we have achieved through our own efforts.
“Moreover, diplomats will need to obtain written authorization from our Ministry of Foreign Affairs to travel more than 40 kilometers from Plaza Bolívar of Caracas, thus guaranteeing strict respect for their functions,” indicated the head of diplomacy, Yván Gil, in a message published on Telegram.
“Venezuela demands respect for sovereignty and self-determination, principles established in the Charter of the United Nations, especially in the face of those who submit to the directives of Washington,” the statement added.
The statements from the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs come shortly after a denunciation of attacks against the premises of five consulates general, which were, according to Chavismo, orchestrated by the “commandos of fascism”, in reference to the political groups of the campaign of opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, without providing evidence.
“In an action coordinated by the commandos of unleashed fascism, several of our consulates were attacked by extremists who cause the same damage to our diplomatic representations as they wish to inflict on our dear Bolivarian homeland“, specified Yván Gil on Telegram.
Moreover, he demanded from the authorities of Portugal, Germany, Colombia, Spain and Costa Rica diligence in the investigations in order to identify those responsible and guarantee the integrity of these installations, “as stipulated in the Vienna Convention”.
“Fascist hatred inoculated, stimulated and protected for years abroad is the main cause of these attacks,” said Gil, who shared images showing graffiti on a banner, on various facades of consular representations, as well as ‘a photo of González Urrutia wearing a presidential sash.
This situation highlights the complexities of modern diplomatic relations, illustrating how actions perceived as hostile can lead to drastic decisions. Venezuela’s demand for respect for sovereignty raises questions about the balance of power in the contemporary international context. What could be the long-term repercussions for diplomacy in this region of the world?
