In his spectacular debut at the Australian Open, Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca scored a remarkable victory against Russian Andrey Rublev, world number 9, winning in three sets 3-0 on Tuesday January 14. The match ended with scores of 7-6 (1), 6-3 and 7-6 (5), lasting 2 hours and 23 minutes.

Fonseca showed a consistent performance throughout the match, leaving no opportunities for Rublev. He maintained his composure during the crucial first and third set tie-breaks, demonstrating remarkable emotional control under pressure.

Another highlight of João Fonseca’s debut was his forehand, recorded at the fastest speed of the Australian Open so far, reaching an impressive speed of 181 km/h. Fonseca has now achieved his fourteenth consecutive victory on the ATP circuit, temporarily entering the “top 100” of the men’s rankings. “It’s my first time in such an important tournament, and I really enjoy it. I want to thank this incredible crowd,” Fonseca said.

“There are a lot of Brazilians here cheering for me, and it was an incredible moment. I was just focused on my game, trying not to put too much pressure on myself against a top 10 player, enjoying the support from the public. I’m just having fun, and now we move on to the second round I have one thing to add: it’s Brazil!” he concluded.

In the second round of the Australian Open, the Brazilian prodigy will face Italian Lorenzo Sonego, currently ranked 55th in the ATP rankings.
