The Swiss group Coop renounces its franchise contract with The Body Shop

It’s decided, the Swiss distributor Coop has just announced that it is letting the franchise contract that binds it with The Body Shop Switzerland. This contract runs until the end of May 2025. “The unique positioning as initially defined by the franchisor The Body Shop International Limited no longer exists today. The revitalization program implemented by the franchisor in recent years has not achieved the expected objective, despite the great commitment and sustained efforts provided by the staff of The Body Shop Switzerland », specifies Coop.

For the record, the vegan cosmetics brand was placed, in 2024, under the protection of a British administrator before being taken over, not without losses and store closures, by a consortium led by Mike Jatania. Today, the brand only has 113 stores in the United Kingdom for 1,200 employees.

Reallocation of stores to other specialized formats of the group

“All 108 employees of The Body Shop Switzerland will be offered another position within the Coop group. Coop is studying the possibility of reallocating the 33 sales areas that will become vacant to its other specialized formats”explains the Swiss distribution group.

For its part, the British franchisor seems to be on the upswing. An article from Guardian specifies that the brand, once in difficulty, would have reaped £2 million in profits over the first three months following its takeover. As a reminder, The Body Shop had, according to our colleagues, faced £71 million in losses at the end of 2022. The brand had been bought by the German private equity company Aurelius for £207 million and owed its creditors more than £276 million. Three months later, she was placed under the protection of the British judicial administration.
