Ukraine says it hit military chemical plant in Russia with missiles

The war in Ukraine continues to be in full swing, with Russia and Ukraine having been stuck in trench warfare for many months. This Tuesday, January 14, kyiv unveiled new strikes on Russian sites, including a chemical factory. According to the Kremlin, Ukraine used American missiles.

The Ukrainian army said on Tuesday it had struck with missiles overnight a chemical factory producing explosives for the Russian army in the Russian border region of Bryansk, in one of the biggest attacks in Russia since its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia suspects Ukraine of using ATACMS missiles

The attack hit the factory located in the town of Seltso, near Bryansk, capital of the eponymous region, the army said in a statement. “The drones successfully distracted Russian air defenses, paving the way for the missiles to hit the main targets” after which a new wave of drones struck infrastructure around the site, the military said.

The Ukrainian army did not specify which missiles had been used but some Russian media mentioned the American-made ATACMS whose use by kyiv on Russian territory was recently authorized by the White House.

The chemical plant notably produces ammunition for artillery and multiple rocket launchers as well as elements for cruise missiles used by Russia to strike cities in Ukraine, the Ukrainian army said.

“Missiles directly hit the site” and caused “a major fire,” assured a source within the Ukrainian security service (SBU). The source reported three other Russian military or army sites targeted by Ukrainian strikes during the night.

These are a chemical plant in the Tula region hit by drones from the Ukrainian security service, an aerial bomb and cruise missile depot at the Engels airfield (Saratov region) and the Saratov refinery, this source assured.

“This is one of the biggest attacks” by Ukraine on Russia since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine almost three years ago, this source told AFP. Ukraine regularly strikes military targets and energy sites in Russia, in response to the Kremlin strikes which have devastated its territory since February 2022.
