The Malian government has confiscated three tonnes of gold from Canadian mining company Barrick to recover $180 million in unpaid revenue. The gold comes from a mine located near Kayes, a strategic region for gold mining.

This seizure follows a formal notice from the judicial authorities in January. Already in December 2024, Bamako had issued an arrest warrant against the CEO of Barrick on charges of money laundering.

The company reportedly offered a $370 million settlement to ease tensions.
