Hydro-Québec: Work on “La Trenche” begun

THE BAT. Hydro-Québec will invest $1.25 billion to modernize the La Trenche power station, located on the Saint-Maurice River.

This major project, which will extend until 2034, aims to extend the lifespan of this development dating from 1950 while increasing its installed power by 15% from 302 to 350 megawatts. “We must double our production capacity over the coming decades to achieve the energy transition. Increasing the power of our existing power plants, where possible, allows us to limit environmental impacts while capitalizing on our assets,” explains Michel Charron, vice-president of construction projects at Hydro-Québec.

The preparatory work will begin this week and will last until 2027. The replacement of the six turbine-alternator groups will be carried out at a rate of one per year, between 2027 and 2033. Additional interventions, in particular on the upstream and downstream aprons as well as that inside the building, are planned until 2034.

This project is part of Hydro-Québec’s 2035 action plan, aimed at meeting Quebec’s energy transition objectives. “The rehabilitation of La Trenche will ensure that it continues to benefit Quebecers for many years to come,” adds Mr. Charron.

At the same time, Hydro-Québec announced a public participation program to consult local communities, including those of La Tuque and Wemotaci. Luc Martel, mayor of La Tuque, welcomed the initiative: “Each time a major project starts, the economic benefits for our business people are significant. This is excellent news for our region. »

At the peak of the work, up to 200 workers will be mobilized on the site. Hydro-Québec will also collaborate with local businesses to maximize regional economic benefits.

Remember that Hydro-Québec unveiled its 2035 Action Plan for a carbon-free Quebec. This mainly aims to position Quebec as a leader in the global energy transition. With the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, meeting growing demand for electricity and ensuring reliable and affordable service, this plan is based on five strategic priorities.

Five priorities for the energy transition

Among the main axes, Hydro-Québec plans to invest massively in the electrical network in order to guarantee high quality service at a reasonable cost. The company also intends to innovate to encourage more responsible consumption of electricity and explore various solutions to increase its production by supporting Quebec’s economic ambitions.

Hydro-Québec is also committed to an economic reconciliation process with the First Nations and the Inuit, in partnership with the provincial government. Finally, the company wishes to adapt its practices to better meet the needs of its customers while achieving decarbonization objectives.

With this ambitious plan, Hydro-Québec not only wants to contribute to the fight against climate change, but also promote prosperity.
