In 2014, the Innu of Uashat mak Mani-utenam approved by referendum an agreement in principle with Hydro-Québec aimed at settling disputes and building a respectful relationship. According to ITUM, Hydro-Québec refused to finalize the agreement and follow through on it.
In a judgment filed on January 8, 2025, the Superior Court condemns Hydro-Québec for bad faith and for violation of the honor of the Crown towards the Innu of Uashat mak Mani-utenam, thus vindicating them.
The court annuls the 2014 agreement in principle, allowing the Innu to resume procedures on the La Romaine Project and ordering Hydro-Québec to pay $5 million, plus interest and costs.
“This judgment is a great victory for us. This is a recognition of the governance of our people, which must be respected by the provincial and federal governments as well as their crown corporations,” said Chief Mike McKenzie in a press release.
ITUM also promises to ensure the defense of the rights of the Innu of Uashat mak Mani-utenam and hopes that this judgment will pave the way towards a new, more positive relationship with the state corporation.
