It is a press release with a firm tone, a demonstration of the anger of Paris. This Friday, January 10, France summoned the Iranian ambassador to Paris to denounce the situation of “state hostages” French detained by the Islamic Republic, its Foreign Ministry announced in a press release.
“Our demand for the immediate release of French nationals who are state hostages was reiterated with the greatest firmness” of Tehran, whose situation is “unbearable, with undignified conditions of detention which, for some, amount to torture under international law”declared the ministry in this press release.
The “total mobilization” of Paris
Three French people are currently in detention on site. Cécile Kohler and her companion Jacques Paris have been detained in this country since spring 2022. This associate professor of modern literature, originally from Soultz (Haut-Rhin) was arrested with her husband for “espionage” while they were on a tourist trip.
A third Frenchman, named Olivier but whose last name has not been made public, has also been detained in Iran since 2022. “The mobilization of the French authorities to obtain the release of our compatriots and support their families and loved ones remains total”indicated the Quai d’Orsay this Friday. For his part, the Frenchman Louis Arnaud, who was languishing in Iranian prisons, was released in June 2024 after two years of detention. He was arrested on charges over his participation in protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.
