Thanks to iOS 18, live messaging functionality has arrived on our iPhones! We explain to you how it works and especially how to activate it in just a few seconds.

Voicemail gets a makeover on iOS 18 with a handy new feature: live messaging. From now on, you can read in real time what a correspondent is dictating to you when they leave a voice message. Imagine the practicality: you no longer even need to wait to listen to a message, it is displayed before your eyes, in text, as soon as it is recorded. Whether you are in a meeting, in a noisy environment or simply unavailable, this option offers some really interesting flexibility since you can decide to interrupt the message to answer the call or simply read quietly what has been said.

If this new feature intrigues you, we’ll explain how it works and how to activate it to take advantage of it now!

Live messaging transcribes voice messages left by your correspondents in real time. When a call is missed, your iPhone automatically prompts the caller to leave a voicemail message. As he speaks, an instant transcription appears on your locked screen, and if you unlock your smartphone, you can read every word live, without waiting for the message to finish.

This transcription is directly integrated into the iPhone’s visual messaging. Once the message is recorded, you will be able to both view the transcription and listen to the voice file, depending on your preferences. However, note that this feature requires an active network connection: if your iPhone is turned off or out of network, the call will be redirected to your operator’s classic messaging system.

  • First, open the app Settings from your iPhone and go to the section Phone.
  • Press Live Messaging in the menu.
  • Make sure the option is enabled by toggling the button to Oui.
