Zizou Bergs failed to qualify for the second round of the Australian Open by losing to Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta.
Zizou Bergs (ATP 60) was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open, the first round of the tennis Grand Slam, Tuesday in Melbourne. The Belgian No.2, who nevertheless led two sets to one, was beaten by the Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta (ATP 73) after a marathon of five sets and 4h07 of play: 6-7 (5/7 ), 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The South American made the break in the fifth set to lead 5-4. Bergs had three opportunities to counter-breaker (0-40), but Diaz Acosta managed to line up the next five points synonymous with victory.
Bergs went out in the first round as during his two previous participations in 2023 and 2024. However, he began the first Grand Slam of the season with confidence after his first final of an ATP tournament, lost on Saturday in Auckland against Gaël Monfils. The 25-year-old Limburger won their only previous duel 7-5, 6-4 last October in the first round of the European Open in Antwerp.
Few Belgian survivors
Elise Mertens (WTA 34) is the only Belgian present in the second round. In the first round, she defeated the Swiss Viktorija Golubic, 95th in the world, from qualifying, with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4. In the 32nd final, Mertens will face the 7th seed and 6th world player Jessica Pegula.
-Still among the women, Greet Minnen (WTA 91) was eliminated by Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava (WTA 195) 5-7, 7-5 and 7-6 (10/5 in the super tie break).
Finally among the men, David Goffin, 54th player in the world, lost 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) against the Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi (ATP 64) upon entering the fray on Monday and Gauthier Onclin (ATP 239) was released in four sets, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-2 by the American Reilly Opelka (ATP 170) Sunday.
