The 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck just 18 km from the country’s coast.
Very close to the coast
At 9:19 p.m. local time, or 7:19 a.m. in Quebec, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the Pacific very close to the coast of Japan, at a depth of 36 km. The epicenter is therefore located less than 20 km from the city of Miyazaki, an urban center with a population of more than 600,000 people.
Little worry
There was initially fear of a tsunami risk, then the authorities withdrew the alert. We only fear waves of one meter resulting from this earthquake, although it is quite violent. We still strongly advise avoiding sailing in the waters of the affected area, and emergency services are still ready to intervene if there is a tsunami, which would probably not have destructive effects.
