Should we believe Tyson Fury again? This is the question that the world of boxing will inevitably ask itself, barely three weeks after the new defeat of the 36-year-old Briton against the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk. For his part, the former WBC heavyweight world champion is affirmative: the vacation is for now, and with immediate effect.
“I would like to announce my retirement from boxing,” declared the “Gipsy King” in a video broadcast on social networks this Monday. “I had a lot of fun. I loved every minute of it and I’ll end with this: Dick Turpin (early 18th century highwayman) wore a mask! “.
If there is reason to think that this announcement is just a media stunt, it is because Tyson Fury is not his first such stunt. Already on August 12, 2022, his 34th birthday, he had already decided to put his gloves away, a few months after his victory at Wembley against his compatriot Dillian Whyte (KO in the 6th round). He finally reversed his decision the following December and won against Derek Chisora.
World boxing superstar, Fury went through very dark phases between depression (when he was not boxing…), suicidal thoughts and suspension for doping. He therefore retired with a record of 34 victories, including 24 by knockout, for a draw and two defeats.
