TikTok is in fact targeted by a law promulgated in 2024, providing for the ban on platforms owned by foreign entities and presenting a risk to national security. Lawmakers say the app is being exploited by the Chinese government for espionage and propaganda purposes. ByteDance, the parent company of the social network, has until January 19 to sell it to an American entity, under penalty of outright ban.
