An official from Moosomin, a village located more than 200 kilometers east of Regina, affirmed that the municipality’s initiative to offer $30,000 per house built is bearing fruit. This community is the scene of an explosion of construction sites.
Last August, the village, which has nearly 2,600 inhabitants, took great measures to compensate for the lack of housing in its territory by announcing the granting of this famous check for each housing unit built.
-The nearly $1 million in funding comes from the federal Fund to Accelerate Housing Construction. The municipality gives $30,000 to each person who builds houses for the first housing built then $8,000 per additional housing if there are several in the same building.
Casey McCormac, an economic development manager for the municipality, emphasized that this program is a success.
We thought it was a good incentive and hoped it would make headlines, which it did.
Casey McCormac says the incentive made it possible to break ground on two 12-apartment buildings and another with six apartments. Building permits were also delivered for two houses and a basement unit.
This clearly shows that Moosomin needed this funding to meet its housing needs, that people want to live in Moosomin and that there is a housing shortage
she emphasizes.
However, this funding is coming to an end. There are only 10 homes left that will be able to benefit from the financing. However, the municipal council is considering putting in place other incentives since we need a lot more housing
she adds.
