Quebec has given the green light to the construction of the Pohénégamook-Picard-Saint-Antonin-Wolastokuk (PPAW) wind farm. This project includes the installation of 56 wind turbines with a total power of 350 megawatts.
As Info Dimanche reports, it will be located in Pohénégamook, Saint-Antonin, Saint-Honoré-de-Témiscouata, on the unorganized territory of Picard, as well as on the ancestral territory of the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation.
This agreement will enable the process for permit applications and certificates of authorization to begin.
Carried out in partnership between the Eastern Energy Alliance and Invenergy, the wind farm represents investments of just over $1 billion.
Eastern Alliance member communities will receive $137 million during the wind farm’s operating period and host communities will receive payments of $45 million.
-Deforestation work should begin this winter.
350 workers on site
During the busiest period, around 350 people are expected to work on the site. The operation of the wind farm will create 23 jobs in the long term.
This project was selected as part of a call for tenders launched by Hydro-Québec in 2021 for the supply of electricity from renewable energy.
The contract between the state-owned company and PPAW Wind Energy is for a period of 30 years.
