Tired of cars driving too fast under your windows? Call the mayor of Ponteilla-Nyls? The elected official of the Pyrénées-Orientales commune has taken a bold decision to respond to this recurring problem. Since Wednesday January 8, 2025, the speed limit has been lowered to 40 km/h throughout the town.
With its 3,000 inhabitants, the town of Ponteilla-Nyls faces a “scourge”, in the words of the town hall: non-compliance with speed limits. This problem was identified as a priority during a meeting on the road safety organized in March 2024. At the end of this consultation, the municipality decided to lower the maximum authorized speed, previously set at 50 km/h.
A decision taken last March
“Failure to respect speed limits by motorists is a subject at the heart of current concerns in the municipality”, indicated the town hall, relayed by Actu.fr. This new measure aims above all to calm traffic and improve the safety of road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.
-But the municipality also hopes for other benefits, including a reduction in noise pollution and an improvement in air quality. The town hall also intends to strengthen road checks and continue its awareness raising among residents.
