As Boca’s goalkeeper, Marchesín takes the reins of succession from “Chiquito”. With Sergio “Chiquito” Romero due to undergo surgery on his right knee and being rested for some time, the Football Council has started looking at several names to compete for a place alongside Leandro Brey. The former Lanús goalkeeper is at the top of the list due to the quota of foreign players.
Boca closed Tuesday with complicated news. Sergio Romero has a right knee problem and requires a clean-up operation, meaning he is expected to be sidelined for some time. However, the Football Council acted quickly, putting together a preliminary list of candidates to replace Chiquito and compete internally with Leandro Brey and Javier García, who recently extended his contract for another year. Who leads the list? Agustín Marchesín, although other names are also under consideration.
Before the search for a third goalkeeper was put on hold, several offers had reached the La Bombonera offices. One of them came from Uruguayan Washington Aguerre, a Peñarol player, who reached the semi-finals of the last Copa Libertadores. Last season, he played 34 matches, finishing 22 without conceding a goal and letting in 18. Additionally, he was crowned champion in both domestic tournaments and lost only two matches.

A similar situation happened with Brayan Cortés, who was just crowned champion in Chile with Jorge Almirón’s Colo-Colo, where Boca’s new recruit Carlos Palacios also shone. After several weeks of tension, the Iquique-born player extended his contract, which was due to expire in December, for three more years, with one of the highest salaries in the team.

The problem, as in the case of Aguerre, is the quota of foreign players. Currently the places are occupied by Edinson Cavani, Miguel Merentiel, Carlos Palacios and Marcelo Saracchi, while Luis Advíncula and Frank Fabra have obtained dual nationality. Five players can register, and six is the team limit. The initial plan is to pursue Spanish player Ander Herrera to fill the remaining quota.
Who could be the solution? The Argentinian Agustín Marchesín. Although we move cautiously within the Boca environment, he is one of the goalkeepers they favor. Having had a successful past at Lanús, he currently plays for Grêmio and has a contract until December this year. Last year he conceded 48 goals in 46 matches. No formal negotiations have yet taken place, despite his name having been on the radar in previous transfer windows.
Galíndez de Huracán is non-transferable. The Council inquired about Galíndez’s evaluation several weeks ago, but Huracán declared him non-transferable.

Guido Herrera and Hernán Galíndez were also on the list at one point, but Talleres is not ready to part ways with his captain, and Huracán has declared his goalkeeper non-transferable. However, the Board is awaiting a meeting with coach Fernando Gago to understand his opinion and plan the next steps. The research has only just begun.
