TORONTO, Jan 7, 2025 /CNW/ – The CIBC Bank (TSX: CM) (NYSE: CM) pays tribute to its former President and CEO, John Hunkinwho died earlier this week. Mr. Hunkin led CIBC from 1999 to 2005.

Mr. Hunkin took over as CEO of CIBC in 1999. During his tenure, CIBC made the fundamental acquisition of Merrill Lynch’s brokerage business in Canadathereby strengthening CIBC Wood Gundy and the bank’s position in wealth management, and constituting a key pillar of its current success in this sector.

He has always been guided by his belief in CIBC’s growth potential and its ability to lead, essential elements of the bank’s goal of helping to move ideas of its customers to reality.

Outside of his professional career, Mr. Hunkin often devoted himself to helping others.

“John and his wife, Susan Crockerhave contributed to the advancement of education and health care in the Canada thanks to their many charitable donations over the years, including notable contributions to health care in Nova Scotia, where John settled after retiring from our bank in 2005,” added Mr. Dodig.

In tribute to his influence on our activities and our country, Mr. Hunkin received the Order of Canada in 2019 for his extraordinary contribution to Canada and for his leadership in philanthropy to strengthen our country for the future.
