(Brussels) The Belgian Grand Prix, contested on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, has been extended until 2031 with the exception of 2028 and 2030, opening the door to alternation between several Grands Prix, announced Wednesday in a communicated the Formula 1 promoter.

The extension therefore includes the Grands Prix in 2025, 2026, 2027, 2029 and 2031. For the two missing years, Spa GP does not rule out being able to still include the event on the calendar, according to Vanessa Maes, director of the organizing company of the Belgian event.

There was at one time talk of an alternation between the Dutch GP, contested in Zandvoort, and that of Belgium. Ultimately this will not happen, with the Dutch event disappearing from the calendar after 2026.

But the idea of a rotation between several European Grands Prix, long supported by Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, could materialize after 2028, given the absence of Belgium every other year .

The extension announced on Wednesday follows significant investments made at the circuit in recent years, including the addition of two new stands, increasing capacity by 10,000 seats.

“The Belgian Grand Prix was one of the races of our first championship in 1950. As we enter the year of our 75e anniversary, it was entirely appropriate that we were able to share the news of this important extension,” said Stefano Domenicali.

“Spa-Francorchamps is rightly regarded by drivers and fans as one of the best circuits in the world and has been the scene of some incredible moments,” he added.

Last year, the Belgian GP, won by Briton Lewis Hamilton, welcomed 380,000 spectators throughout the three days of the race weekend.

This year, the event will take place from July 25 to 27 and will see the return of a sprint race on the Ardennes slide. With a length of 7.004 km, it is the longest circuit on the calendar.
