We’ve already told you, the index is coming soon, but it’s not for today. The inflation figures for December, published this Wednesday by Statec, show almost stable prices, with an increase of 0.1% compared to November, linked in particular to travel costs. Over one year, the inflation rate rises from 0.8% to 1%.
Statec notes that at the end of the year, seasonal movements impact inflation. Thus, with the school holidays, “air ticket prices soared by 25.6% compared to November, and by 4.5% compared to December 2023”. For package travel, prices increased by 15.1% over one month.
Petroleum products also started to rise again, with +1% over one month, after four months of decline in a row. If prices at the pump increased for all fuels (+1.3% for diesel, +0.5% for gasoline) between November and December, prices for petroleum products remain lower by 8.1% over a year.
In the food aisle, prices decreased by 0.2% over one month. Fresh fruit (-3.1%), pizzas and quiches (-2.5%) and fresh vegetables (-2%) are subject to the greatest declines. On the other hand, fresh fish (+5.2%), tea (+2.6%) and cheese (+0.7%) were more expensive in December than in November. The price of alcoholic beverages fell by 2.2%, because sellers ran promotions for the holidays, particularly on spirits and liqueurs (-3.7%), wine (-2.6%) and fortified wine (-4.6%).
Over one year, however, food prices as a whole increased by 0.5%, those of alcoholic beverages fell by 0.4%. Finally, in December, the prices of crèches and relay houses fell by 5.9% over one month and the price of electricity fell by 13.6%.
