The completion, in December 2024, of Phase 2 of the “Whale” oil and natural gas field will make it possible to produce 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
The Italian energy group Eni began crude production from Phase 2 of the oil and natural gas field on December 28 ” Whale” located in deep waters off the southeast coast of Côte d’Ivoire, the Ministry of Oil said in a press release on December 29.
This step comes three years after the first discovery in 2021 and two years after the second discovery in 2022, by the Italian oil company and its Ivorian partner « Petroci Holding ».
The start of this phase 2 concerns the “global production of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day (bpj, NDLR)a level unmatched by national production for twenty years. At the same time, 70 million cubic feet (nearly 2 million cubic meters) of natural gas per day will be produced, strengthening the security of natural gas supply for the power sector.clarified the text.
The third phase of development will aim to increase the field’s production to 150,000 barrels/day of oil and 200 million cubic feet (5.7 million cubic meters) of associated gas.
This second phase of operation is based on the floating oil production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) Petrojarl Kong.
“The export of crude oil will be ensured via the FSO Yamoussoukro, a floating storage and unloading unit. Natural gas, for its part, will be transported to the thermal power plants via the gas pipeline network built during the initial phase of the project.concluded the press release.
