The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter of the latest earthquake was about 92 km from Lobuche (Nepal), along the border plateau with China’s Tibet, Reuters reported on January 7.1.
USGS data also records Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, at the same time there was a tremor with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale. It is still not possible to confirm whether anyone was climbing Mount Everest at the time of the earthquake.
For its part, the China Earthquake Network Center recorded a 6.8 magnitude earthquake near one of Tibet’s holiest cities, damaging many houses around the town of Shigatse and forcing people to flee their homes in Nepal and India.
The Chinese center said the earthquake occurred at 8:05 a.m. on January 7.1 (Vietnam time), with the epicenter at a depth of 10 km.
-The impact of the earthquake extended to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, located 400 km away.
The state of Bihar, in northern India, bordering Nepal, also felt the effects of the earthquake. Many people rushed out of their homes and apartments and into open spaces.
To date, no casualties have been reported. However, earthquakes measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale or 7.1 on the Richter scale can cause serious damage to people and property.
