“The Rig”: A captivating thriller to discover on Prime Video
Rose (Emily Hampshire) observes containers filled with water in season 2 of “The Rig” on Prime Video. The platform is full of quality films and series, but some titles go unnoticed. Last year, “My Lady Jane” met this sad fate and was canceled after just one season. With this in mind, I remain vigilant as to shows which could risk not finding their audience, which leads me to mention “The Rig”, a Scottish thriller mixing supernatural and science fiction elements, which has returned for a second season on January 2, 2025.
I remember watching this fascinating eco-thriller when the first season launched in 2023. Yet, I didn’t come across any promotions or information regarding the renewal of the series until the second season arrived .
I’ve watched all six new episodes, and “The Rig” manages to retain the elements that made it a compelling show when it first aired. This is why I support it. If you see “The Rig” on your Prime Video homepage, I encourage you to give it a chance — here’s why.
What is ‘The Rig’ season 2 about?
“The Rig” is a sci-fi/supernatural thriller that follows the crew of the Kinloch Bravo oil rig as they face a terrible storm in the North Sea. As they work, a mysterious mist cuts them off from the rest of the world and awakens strange supernatural forces. Paranoia sets in as disturbing theories about their surroundings take precedence over reality, worsening the already strained relationships between the crew members, who must face a hostile environment as well as new, inexplicable dangers.
Season 2 continues the story of the survivors of the initial event. Held at a secret new compound named “Stac” in the Arctic Circle, the crew members react to the aftermath of the deadly event that closed the first season, while confronting growing conspiracies, corporate cover-ups and new threats in this deadly landscape.
Should you watch “The Rig” on Prime Video?
I’m not claiming that “The Rig” is a perfect series. The best way to sum it up would be to call it a supernatural thriller aimed at “Doctor Who” fans. This parallel is not new and for good reason; although well performed, the series sometimes has a somewhat rudimentary side.
-However, this isolated universe and its central concept make it an intriguing spectacle. Lovecraftian encounters with deep and ancient enemies are not uncommon, but if this universe appeals to you, I have no doubt that the series’ exploration of the supernatural secrets will captivate you.
With some hard-hitting body horror moments and the typical thrills of the genre, “The Rig” unfolds its intrigue in tense settings – first on the oil platform, then in the secret laboratories of Stac. The storyline, sometimes obvious, is supported by talented Scottish and English actors such as Iain Glen, Martin Compston, Rochenda Sandall et Mark Addy.
Although the special effects could be more polished, and the dialogue contains some exposition-heavy passages, I think “The Rig” is claustrophobic and well-constructed enough to attract a larger number of viewers on Prime Video, provided that ‘they give him a chance. Overall, “The Rig” proves to be a satisfying sci-fi series. Made up of two short seasons of six episodes, it is practically ideal for binge-watching.
If you’re looking for a new thriller series to devour, don’t hesitate to give “The Rig” a try.
