Fashion in motion #3 | Galliera Palace

COLLECTIONS EXHIBITION I GROUND FLOOR

From February 8 to October 12, 2025

From February 8 to October 12, 2025, the Palais Galliera unveils the third and final part of its Fashion on the Move collections exhibition. With more than 180 new works presented, the exhibition traces, through the museum’s collections, a history of fashion from the 18th century to the present day and questions the link between the body, fashion and movement. For this new display, a unique focus is placed on winter sports.

Clothing designed throughout the ages for physical and sporting activity is compared to everyday clothing. This dialogue questions the notions of specialization of sports clothing, from the adaptation of women’s outfits for physical activity at the end of the 19th century to the masculinization of women’s clothing, including the introduction of sportswear into everyday wardrobes. Bathing suits, cyclist’s and side-saddle clothes, motorist’s coats and accessories, tennis outfits and sneakers respond to silhouettes illustrating three centuries of fashion history. Beyond a simple chronological reading of the history of clothing, Fashion in Motion #3 allows us to understand how the liberation of the body has changed mentalities and canons of beauty.

This last exhibition devotes a large section to winter sports and looks back at the emergence of high altitude resorts with the development of new winter activities: skiing, tobogganing, ice hockey, skating, sledding… We are witnessing the gradual appearance of suitable outfits and accessories, offered both by specialized equipment manufacturers (Rossignol, Tunmer, Mavest), fashion houses (Hermès, Jean Patou, Madeline de Rauch), and even collaborations between the two. This section is also an opportunity to discover the museum’s important collection made up of down jackets, overalls, spindles and knitted accessories…

The exhibition benefited from exceptional loans from CHANEL Heritage, the National Sports Museum (), the Forney library, the Historical Library of the City of , the Carnavalet museum – History of Paris, the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation , from the Émile Hermès collection, from Patrimoine Hermès, from the Balenciaga Archives, from Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, from Fusalp and even from Coq Sportif. These works allow us to put into perspective the rooms of the Palais Galliera, witnesses of physical and sporting practice, leisure or competition, over the ages.
