Mr. Trudeau made the announcement during a press briefing in front of his residence in Ottawa on Monday morning.

“I intend to resign as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and as Prime Minister once the party has chosen its next leader following a national, rigorous and competitive process,” he said. he declared.

“The country deserves a clear and real choice in the next elections,” he added. It became clear to me that if I have to focus on internal battles, I cannot be the best option in these elections.”

Following several difficult months for the head of state, the pressure on him was at its peak since the resignation of his deputy prime minister and finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, last month.

The Prime Minister had still not spoken publicly to comment on this resounding departure from his cabinet, and had even decided to cancel all his end-of-year interviews with the media.

“Chrystia was by my side for almost 10 years,” Mr. Trudeau said on Monday. She has been an essential political partner in everything we have achieved as a government and within our party. I really would have liked her to continue as Deputy Prime Minister and take on one of the most important files that our government will face in the months to come, but she didn’t want to.”

“As far as what actually happened, I’m not in the habit of sharing private conversations,” he continued.

The one who has been in office since his election in 2015 has therefore decided to leave the leadership of the PLC, which will give rise to a race for the leadership of the party over the coming weeks and months.

“Last night, I asked the party president to begin the necessary steps,” said the Prime Minister. I look forward to watching this process unfold in the months to come.”

Parliament will be prorogued until March.

“Parliament needs a resethe needs to calm down a little to get back to work for Canadians and not engage in constant petty politics, like what we are seeing from the Conservatives,” said Justin Trudeau.

«Ce reset has two elements, he added. An extension, so that we can start again with a fresh approach to parliament, and secondly, the liberal party will begin [une course] to leadership, because I expect that […] the polarization we are currently seeing should also calm down a little.”

According to the latest survey by the Léger firm carried out at the end of December, the PLC is second in federal voting intentions with 20%, far behind the Conservative Party which would collect 43% of the votes.
