For Epiphany, the bakeries of Nouméa prepared “offbeat” pastries. Between a bean that allows you to win a trip or a “cookiteau” of kings, Caledonians have the choice to indulge themselves.
Frédéric Amarger’s bakery and pastry shop at the Orphelinat in Nouméa is offering a gift this year in addition to the famous bean hidden in the galette des rois. Despite the increase in the price of raw materials, he insisted on maintaining a tradition of his own.“We have been doing this great game for almost five years. This initiative also builds customer loyalty. Despite the crisis, we still wanted to make the maximum effort. And so, this year, we still have 750,000 francs vouchers to be won three times for 10 days”, he explains.
Competition is tough, so to attract customers, some bakers slip beans with figurines which appeal to both children and adults.
Coco, the saleswoman, is delighted with the success of this Sunday. “We’ve been baking since midnight, we’re super happy because we see that customers are buying. They saw our ad on Facebook, it attracted them. Every year, we change the themes of the beans. There, we chose Marvel”, she said enthusiastically.
-With banana, chocolate, apple, or even cookies to stand out, this shop located in the Baie des Citrons has focused on an original dessert for Epiphany. “Cookiteaux des rois are king cakes. With the bean and the crown, but in the shape of giant cookies. They are approximately 18 cm in diameter and weigh 600 grams. We have only one flavor this year: pistachio-white chocolate, to vary the pleasures“, explains Perle Blanchet, the manager.
