The Ministry of Ecological Transition is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the risks linked to intense rains and floods which can hit Island during the cyclone period and to remind people of good reflexes.

Even if Reunion Island has been affected by a drought phenomenon for several months, the start of 2025, already marked by three warnings of heavy rain, serves as a reminder that the island is indeed in the cyclone season.

This is the moment chosen by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forests, Sea and Fisheries to launch the third wave of its information and awareness campaign on intense rains and floods in overseas territories. This time, Guyana and Reunion are affected.

From January 6 to February 6, 2025, posters in French and Creole, posts on social networks, flyers for tourists and spots will remind the population of the risks involved and remind people of good behavior to follow, “in order to avoid counterintuitive reactions” in case of exposure.

  • do not travel on foot;
  • do not take your car;
  • get up high;
  • not pick up your children from school (unless instructed by the authorities);
  • stay at your workplace;
  • move away from watercourses and ravines;
  • do not cross a ford;
  • and not put yourself in danger for your animals.
  • follow the instructions of the authorities given via radio, social networks, etc.

It is also recommended to prepare an emergency kit allowing you to be independent for three days and place it in an easily accessible place.

“Even outside of a cyclonic episode, intense rains leading to flash floods are dangerous”underlines the ministry, inviting the population to adopt “good reflexes.”
