Naomi Osaka’s hopes of winning her first title in four years were dashed in a dramatic twist, as the former world number 1 was forced to retire due to injury after winning the first set at the final of the Auckland Classic against Danish Clara Tauson on Sunday.
The match ended in anticlimactic fashion, leaving Tauson with mixed emotions despite having secured her third WTA Tour title, also looking to break a long wait for trophies. “I have to admit that I’m really sorry for the way this final turned out. Naomi had exceptional tennis, and I feel terrible for what happened today,” Tauson said in his comments. ‘post-match.
“Without a doubt, when I look back on this, I will feel elated about my week as a whole. Winning is always a great feeling, but not under these circumstances,” she added, reflecting on the sweet nature- bitter about his victory.
