Naomi Osaka’s hopes of winning her first title in four years were dashed in a dramatic twist, as the former world number 1 was forced to retire due to injury after winning the first set at the final of the Auckland Classic against Danish Clara Tauson on Sunday.

The match ended in anticlimactic fashion, leaving Tauson with mixed emotions despite having secured her third WTA Tour title, also looking to break a long wait for trophies. “I have to admit that I’m really sorry for the way this final turned out.
