The Koksijde cyclocross ended with the final victory of Laurens Sweeck ahead of the Dutchman Tibor Del Grosso.
Laurens Sweeck won the Koksijde cross on Friday, the 6th of 8 rounds of the X2O Cyclocross Trophy. After the withdrawals of world champion Mathieu van der Poel and European champion Thibau Nys, an open race took place on the dunes of the Belgian coast. U23 world champion Tibor del Grosso took 2nd place in 26 seconds, his best cross-country result among elites, and Toon Aerts placed 3rd in 52 seconds. Pim Ronhaar placed 4th at 1:06 and Joran Wyseure closed the top 5 at 1:25.
A fall at the first corner put many competitors out of the race, including Niels Vandeputte. The fight for victory quickly turned into a mano a mano between the Dutchman Del Grosso (21 years old) and the experienced Sweeck (31 years old). The latter made the difference in the sandy portions of the penultimate of the eight laps to fly to victory, his 5th this season and the 2nd this week after the Superprestige of Diegem which he dominated on Monday.
In the women’s race, Dutchwoman Puck Pieterse won ahead of her compatriots Lucinda Brand and Fem van Empel, who finished 19 and 39 seconds behind respectively. Sanne Cant took 5th place, Julie Brouwers and Marthe Truyen finished 7th and 8th while Laura Verdonschot closed the top 10.
Overall, Brand is still comfortably in the lead with 9:59 ahead of Van Empel and 14:31 over Annemarie Worst. Laura Verdonschot is the best Belgian, 7th at 6:49 p.m. just ahead of Sanne Cant, 8th at 6:55 p.m.
Among the hopefuls, Kay De Bruyckere won ahead of Yordi Corsus and the Dutchman Keije Solen. The Italian Mattia Agostinacchio won the junior race.
