A terrible accident occurred this Friday, January 3 around 9:30 a.m. at a place called Le Nouveau-Monde in La Chapelle Viel, a town located south of L'Aigle. Two cars collided head-on on the D930.
A woman was traveling in each vehicle, one aged 30, the other 60 years old. When firefighters arrived, the two victims were trapped in the passenger compartment. 17 rescuers responded to the disaster, coming from the L'Aigle, Bourth, Longny, Mortagne and Argentan barracks.
The SMURs from L'Aigle and Mortagne were also dispatched to the site. In vain, the two women were pronounced dead mid-morning.
On the roads of Orne, the year 2025 therefore begins as badly as it ended since 6 deaths were deplored in the month of December. In 2024, 27 people lost their lives in road accidents in the department, compared to 21 in 2023.
At the end of the year, Colonel Pierre-Olivier Benech, head of the Orne gendarmes, regretted the very high number of face-to-face collisions. The doubly deadly disaster of this Friday unfortunately falls into this category.
