Watch out for January 3: it's the day when the most people die in France: News

January 3 is the deadliest day of the year in for 20 years, reports BFMTV. How to explain the phenomenon? Elements of response.

Caution. January 3 has, for 20 years, been a particularly deadly day in France. It is even the day when there are the most deaths in France. The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) notes that on average over the last 20 years, 1,900 people die on this day, reports BFMTV. This is why we must be particularly careful this Friday.

Questioned by the continuous news channel, Vincent Pradeau, president of the National Union of Cardiologists, confirms the statistical data: “In countries in the northern hemisphere, all-cause mortality peaks in early January.” But for him, it is difficult to put forward a hypothesis to explain the phenomenon. For INSEE, you don't have to look far to find the reason for excess mortality on January 3: “The desire to spend these holidays with loved ones, as well as the desire to reach a new year could delay the onset of death for people at the end of life and partly explain this peak.”

Consumption of fatty and alcoholic products

In addition, after the end-of-year holiday break, high-risk surgical operations resume at the beginning of the year and can therefore also explain, in part, increased mortality during this period. The fatty diet and increased sedentary lifestyle due to the cold are another explanation for Vincent Pradeau. Always near BFMTVthe president of the National Union of Cardiologists adds that excess alcohol “increases heart rhythm disorders, particularly atrial fibrillation which can lead to the formation of blood clots”.

If January 3 is the deadliest day, we have to look at the heart of summer to find the day with the fewest deaths. August 15 is the day with the fewest deaths (1,410) in France on average over the last twenty years.
