Former US President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, after spending more than a year in palliative care.

After celebrating his 100th birthday on October 1, he fulfilled his wish to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris in the presidential election.

Originally from Georgia, the death of his father in 1953 forced him to return to Plains to take care of the family’s farm and peanut operation. He became governor of Georgia in 1971.

Carter served a presidential term marked by complex challenges in the White House, from 1977 to 1981. Although his presidency was turbulent, particularly due to economic and foreign policy crises, he left a lasting legacy as a defender human rights and democracy on a global scale.

History will remember in particular the great achievements of Jimmy Carter on the international scene, including his decisive role during the historic 13 days of September 1978 which led to the signing of the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel.

His personal commitment, his perseverance and his negotiating skills made it possible to bring together the Egyptian leaders, Anwar el-Sadat, and Israeli leaders, Menachem Begin, resulting in a peace treaty which remains one of the major milestones of diplomacy in the Middle East.
