Getaway – The theater-museum of Figueres, a surrealist site in the image of Salvator Dali

We rush to visit it. Every year, the theater-museum of Figueres in Catalonia (Spain) welcomes more than a million visitors. It is an iconic place in the image of the character that everyone will recognize in particular by his mustache, in itself a work of art, a “fang” mustache.

Salavador Dali, surrealist artist left his mark on his era and, even today, there are hundreds of people exploring this theater-museum, imagined and designed by the Master.

This former municipal theater of Figueres even saw Salvador Dali take his first steps there in 1919 as an artist. He has decided that his museum will be built in the ruins of the city's old theater destroyed by fire during the Spanish Civil War. During the last fifteen years of his life, he oversaw what would become his final great work, which in his eyes would embody the spiritual center of surrealism.

Salvador Dali Domenech Marques de Dali de Pubol was buried under the dome, “the center of the universe” he said, after his death on January 23, 1989 at the age of 84. His tombstone is visible in a corner of a very dark room without the public attaching much importance to it. It’s true that there is so much to see and discover in this theater-museum!

Originally, Salvador Dali should have been buried near Gala, whose real name was Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, a Russian who was the wife of the French poet, Paul Eluard. In the crypt of Pubol Castle, she rests alone.

This theater-museum is an incredible masterpiece. He is extraordinary, fantastic. In every corner, we feel the presence of the painter, the power of his total investment in creation. Space is imbued with its essence.

Salvator Dali brought it to life.
