It was announced yesterday that Yannick Nézet-Séguin will lead the New Year’s Concert in Vienna in 2026, a prestigious event followed around the world.
Since 1980, the musical direction of the concert has been entrusted to a different conductor each year, an invitation which has acquired a status of consecration. The name of View-Séguin He is inscribed on a selected list in the first suite of Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Carlos Kleiber, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti (here directed for the seventh year), Lorin Maazel, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Seiji Ozawa, Mariss Jansons , Georges Prêtre, Daniel Barenboim, Franz Welser-Möst, Gustavo Dudamel, Christian Thielemann and Andris Nelsons.
By inviting Nézet-Séguin, the orchestra says it wants to “continue to promote collaborations with the next generation of conductors”.
The concert is in such demand that tickets are distributed by lottery. Registrations to participate in the next draw and risk seeing and hearing Nézet-Séguin’s performance on site take place from February 1 to 28.
First inclusion of a female composer
The concert program focuses on works composed in Vienna during the lifetime of both Johann Strauss, father and son. This year’s edition included for the first time a work by a woman, Constanze Geiger (1835-1890). A child prodigy, Geiger began performing publicly at the age of 8, playing his own compositions on the piano. She composed her Ferdinand Walzerthe work performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker, at the age of 12.
The Philharmonic
Since last year, an orchestra called La Philharmonica and formed by female members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has offered an alternative to the traditional concert. Her New Year’s concert of the composers (Composers’ New Year’s Concert), whose program is half made up of compositions by women, was sold out.
