What Future For Alberto Gamero? Three Options Emerge

Alberto Gamero shook up Colombian football, as it was confirmed on December 31, 2024 that he would be leaving his position as Millonarios coach. During his five seasons in charge, Gamero won a BetPlay Liga title, a Copa, and a Superliga trophy.

His departure was a surprise, especially a little less than a week before the start of the preseason. The latest information indicated that the club management had confirmed his continuation as coach.

However, it was also reported that Gamero had doubts about continuing in his position, mentioning feelings of fatigue and even threats, which ultimately led to his irrevocable resignation.

FUTBOLRED contacted several sources close to coach Gamero. Were there threats or what led to his resignation from the Millonarios? When and for which team will he coach in 2025? Here’s what we learned.

It is not true that he resigned twelve or thirteen times. He questioned his position on a few occasions: in June, after a poor performance in Libertadores, he contacted Gustavo Serpa and mentioned that if he thought it was safe to end the project, he should do so; However, he has always been supported by the club management,” reported a source.

Nevertheless, Gamero did open the door to a possible exit on more than three occasions, but the club’s management “should have realized that there was a disconnect with the fans, that the ‘teacher’ was no longer the same, and they proactively contacted a few candidates before accepting his resignation. It was better to do that than risk the ‘professor’ leaving the team in trouble in March—that would have been much more complicated,” the source said.

What future for Alberto Gamero in 2025?

Another voice, much closer to the 60-year-old coach, shared the three options Gamero is currently considering. His decision will largely depend on discussions with his family.

In this scenario, the three options seem clear to Gamero: “The first to contact him was Mr. César (Camargo), who feels great affection for him and expressed that the doors of Tolima will always be open. However, Alberto indicated that he could not provide an immediate answer on whether he would return to training straight away or not,” the source revealed.

Additionally, two foreign opportunities are on the table that Gamero is considering to promote his career, given that he has already won everything in Colombia with Millonarios and Deportes Tolima, as well as a Liga title with Boyacá Chicó.

However, there is a more solid option for this first semester, because Alberto Gamero plans to prioritize his personal life: “He is thinking of taking six months off to clear his mind, because the shock was very hard for him, and he felt immense pain in resigning from the Millonarios. He also wants to study, watch football and enjoy time with his children, grandchildren and family… we will see what decision he makes, but he is in no rush to return to training.”
