Pyrenees: two hikers lose their lives on the same day

Setting out a few hours apart, with two different groups, two women fell on Wednesday January 1, between the peak of Cagire and the peak of l'Escalette.

In the heart of the Pyrenees, two tragedies unfolded on Wednesday, January 1, just a few hours apart. In a steep area, near a shelter, two women were killed. First, it was a group of three people from who left early Wednesday morning for a hike on the ridge between the Cagire peak and the Escalette peak. At 8:30 a.m., a 34-year-old woman fell more than 300 meters. The PGHM helicopter found the hiker's lifeless body a few minutes later.

At 2 p.m., on the same route, just a few hours after this first accident, another group from Tarn joined. According to rescuers, they were insufficiently equipped. A 46-year-old woman also fell to her death. Authorities are asking hikers to take precautions before heading into the mountains. “People need to know that when they come to the mountains they need to be equipped, and know how to use the equipment”underlines Sylvain Junqua, mayor of Sengouagnet (Haute-Garonne). Following this double tragedy, the mayor of the neighboring town issued a municipal decree to prohibit access to all hiking trails leading to the Cagire peak, until further notice.
