Gazprom suspends Russian gas transit through Ukraine

Russian energy giant Gazprom announced on Wednesday that it had stopped sending natural gas via Ukraine. Russian gas was flowing to Europe via Ukraine despite Russia's invasion of the country in 2022.

Gazprom blamed the suspension of deliveries on Ukraine, which refuses to extend the gas transit agreement. In its press release, Gazprom states in particular that “Gazprom is deprived of any technical and legal possibility of supplying gas for transit through Ukraine from January 1, 2025.”

Ukraine also announced on Wednesday that it had suspended the transit of gas from Russia.

Kyiv previously announced it would refuse to renew the contract and cut off the flow of gas through Ukraine, choking off a source of revenue for Moscow.

Russian media cited an expert who suggested that increased gas transits through Turkey and Bulgaria could partly offset the Ukrainian cutoff.

But the Reuters news agency reported that importers will have to pay higher fees for alternative routes.
