The emotion aroused by the tragedy affecting New Orleans after Wednesday’s car-ramming attack goes beyond Louisiana. The United States is in shock. The latest report shows 15 dead and around thirty injured, with one suspected terrorist a veteran of the American army. The suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, is from Texas. He allegedly drove into the crowd with a rental vehicle, an Islamic State flag attached to the vehicle.
The investigation is continuing and the profile of the attacker is becoming clearer, particularly his links with Daesh. The former American soldier published several videos in the hours leading up to the attack, according to CNN. In these sequences, the suspected terrorist discusses his divorce and explains that he had intended to kill members of his family before changing plans. A flag of the Daesh terrorist organization and explosives were found in the back of the pickup after the attack. One of his relatives spoke in the American press about his recent radicalization.
The suspect would not have acted alone. The FBI is therefore continuing research in Louisiana and surrounding states to try to find possible accomplices.
The explosion of a Tesla vehicle, Elon Musk’s company, also took place on Wednesday in Las Vegas, in front of one of Donald Trump’s hotels. One person died, attracting the attention of investigators. According to President Joe Biden, authorities are investigating whether there is a connection between this explosion and the attack in New Orleans. In both cases, the vehicles were rented with the Turo carpooling app. The Las Vegas sheriff calls it more of a coincidence. Investigations are still ongoing.
