The 2024 Christmas of Meta Quest headsets was marred by a botched update that caused many devices to break down. Even though Meta’s VR headsets have never sold so well.
At 330 euros, the Meta Quest 3S is the cheapest virtual reality headset on the market. Enough to put it under lots of trees at Christmas. Unfortunately, the Christmas of many young and old was spoiled by an update which made many headsets unusable.
The update that killed Meta Quest
The Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest 3S received an update in December, a few days before Christmas. A v72 which contained a bug, mainly present in those who had not used their headset for a long time. It caused the headsets to restart in a loop, or even not restart at all, reports 01net. Including trying to reset the VR headset. Which made the affected devices completely unusable.
Very quickly, Meta indicated that it was working on the bug, inviting users not to update their headset. The developers have disabled the v72 update. Another possible solution: press the power button for 45 seconds to force restart the headset. If it doesn’t work, the company has guaranteed to take care of all of them, including those that are no longer under warranty.
The spoiled 2024 Christmas banger
It is difficult to have precise sales figures for Meta Quest, but the ranking of the most downloaded mobile applications is a good indicator. As noted UploadVRcompanion app Meta Horizon was the most popular free iPhone app on December 25. The application is necessary to configure the VR headset, which explains these numerous downloads.
In the United States, on Amazon alone, the Meta Quest 3S sold more than 100,000 copies in one month. That’s more than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series combined. A much greater success than the Apple Vision Pro which would have sold 420,000 copies, and whose production would have been stopped, less than a year after its launch.
