The Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajic announced a three-day national mourning, on January 2, 3 and 4, after this shooting caused by an armed and drunk man.
A fatal argument
A 45-year-old man killed ten people, including two children, before killing himself on Wednesday in the south of Montenegro. This shootingwhich occurred near the town of Cetinje, marks a dark start to the year for the country. It all started in a restaurant where the suspect had spent the day drinking. After an altercation with another customer, he returned home, took a gun and shot four people. The police chief, Lazar Scepanovic, specifies that it was the owner of the establishment and members of his own family.
A killing at several locations
Armed and drunk, the man went to three other locations. He targeted the Martinovic family, a close relative, and two children aged 10 and 13. A total of four other people were injured, but their condition is no longer considered critical. While on the run, the suspect was surrounded by police. When ordered to put down his weapon, he shot himself in the head. Transported to a hospital center, he succumbed to his injuries, confirmed Lazar Scepanovic in comments echoed by 20 Minutes.
Three days of national mourning
Prime Minister Milojko Spajic declared national mourning on January 2, 3 and 4. He also announced stricter measures regarding gun ownership. “This tragedy raises questions about gun control in the Montenegro“, he declared. The town of Cetinje, already affected by conflicts linked to organized crime, is experiencing an upsurge in violence. By 2024, several serious incidents, including explosions and targeted assassinations, had already shaken the region.
-According to the Small Arms Survey, around 245,000 firearms are in circulation in Montenegro, an alarming figure for a population of only 630,000.
