Seeing, listening, reading Gilles Defacque, a man of many lives, was a triple pleasure. Comedian, clown, author, teacher, director and director, from 1985 to 2021, of the Prato-Théâtre international de district and Pôle national cirque, in Lille, this artist naturally overflowing with joy, enthusiasm, generosity, ideas, talent, didn’t know how to stop. Until his last day at the Peupliers clinic, in Villeneuve-d’Ascq (North), where he died, at the age of 79, of parotid cancer, on the night of Friday 27 Saturday December 28, 2024, he wrote, drew and spoke with all the friends who came to see him.

Gilles Defaque, “born a clown in Christmas trees, at a time when there were no circus schools” as he liked to say, was born, more prosaically, on August 9, 1945, in Friville-Escarbotin (Somme). Before choosing directing and clowning, he studied at the Ecole Normale d’Amiens and was for sixteen years, from 1965 to 1981, a French teacher in the Lille metropolis. At the same time, he leads theater workshops and gradually builds his character with the red nose, “very talkative, very lively”… He plays in evenings for works councils and participates in a political theater collective.
