In the national team, the work of Amadou Onana has often been praised. This is also the case at Aston Villa, which made the Belgian the most expensive player in its history.
Ambitious, the English club spent no less than 60 million euros to afford his services. However, Onana did not arrive with established star status and Unai Emery was sending a pretty clear message when he arrived.
Significant progress
“The gap between his level and what we want to do with him is even greater than what we analyzed before his arrival. But we think he can progress to reach much higher,” he announced in August .
Since then, Onana has established itself and it is in one area in particular that it brings real added value. An area that is, however, not possible to quantify using statistics, which are ever more present. Defensively, the player has progressed enormously and it is his science of movement which allows him to block opposing attacks.
-Shadow work
Work carried out without the ball which makes him a particularly important player in a club which is struggling to achieve the same results as last season, when the club finished in fourth place in the standings. Currently, the Villans are ninth, six points behind fourth place, held by Chelsea.
It is against Leicester this Saturday that we will have to try to collect three new important points before preparing for the third round of the FA Cup against West Ham. There will also be two Champions League matches which will soon arrive. Fifth, Aston Villa is currently one of the direct qualifiers for the round of 16 of the competition.
