Bergs, who benefited from an invitation, may however have some regrets. Trailing 4-2 in the first set, he immediately succeeded in the counter-break before going to the decisive game. Again led 4/1 and 6/3, he dismissed three consecutive set points before giving himself a one set point to nothing (6/7) which the 20-year-old Frenchman dismissed before concluding to his advantage ( 9/7).
In the second set, Fils made the first break (3-2) and confirmed it (4-2). The Antwerp player came back to his level again (4-4). The Frenchman made his second break (5-4) before serving for a place in the quarter-finals and concluding.
Bergs won their only previous meeting 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 in the first round of the 2021 Mouilleron-Le-Captif Challenger.
Zizou Bergs, 25, is also engaged in doubles in the former British colony. He plays it alongside 19-year-old American Learner Tien, finalist in the recent NextGen tournament, the Under-20 Masters. Bergs and Tien will enter the fray at the end of the day against the pair formed by the Italian Luciano Darderi and the British Cameron Norrie.
