In the film posted on social networks, we see a large flash flame after a loud detonation. About seven people are nearby. They themselves seem frightened and run away from the scene. “They were probably young people,” police spokesperson Carl Vyncke told Radio 2. “We don’t know if they are minors, teenagers or in their twenties.”
Police and firefighters received a call, but by the time they arrived on scene, there was no one there. “So far we have not received any reports of injuries. This is surprising, due to the enormous flame caused by the explosion. It is also possible that the perpetrators may have suffered hearing damage.”
The extent of the damage is not yet clear. Firefighters put out the fire. But it is clear that this was arson. “We are going to measure the damage with the services of the town of Izegem. How did the fireworks arrive on the scene?”, indicated Carl Vyncke.
Izegem had authorized fireworks between certain hours. “But in this case, it doesn’t appear to be a common fireworks display.” The police are appealing for witnesses.
