In an INSEE report, updated in mid-December, the demographics of are dissected and show the development of the sub-prefecture of Aude and its conurbation in recent years.

At the end of each year, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, better known by the acronym Insee, releases a file on the different cities, allowing us to know a little more about the demography in Aude and its big cities.

At the departmental level, Aude gained nearly 9,748 inhabitants between 1is January 2016 and 1is January 2022, to reach a population of 377,773 souls. Narbonne still maintains the gap with , with 56,692 inhabitants, or more than 10,000 than the prefecture and its 46,429 inhabitants.

Soon 60,000 inhabitants?

In 1968, Narbonne had “only” 38,441 inhabitants and Carcassonne was then at the top of the most populated towns in Aude (43,616). Little by little, closer to the Mediterranean, Narbonne has been able to stand out from the crowd, attracting more and more residents over the years. 39,342 in 1975, 41,565 in 1982 then a jump to 45,859 at the beginning of the 1990s, before it stagnated somewhat, while still continuing to grow. In 2010, the bar of 50,000 inhabitants was exceeded (51,039 exactly). Finally, 2015 (53,462) and 2022 (56,692) show that Narbonne is on a good demographic pace, and will aim for 60,000 inhabitants in the next decade.

Since 2016, the city of Narbonne has recorded demographic growth of 0.9% per year, which places it in fifth place, tied with its neighbor Béziers, among the most dynamic towns with more than 40,000 inhabitants in , behind Alès (2%), (1.7%), (1.5%) and (1.2%).

Among the 37 municipalities of Greater Narbonne, eight lost inhabitants between 2015 and 2021. This is particularly the case of Coursan, which went from 5,844 inhabitants to 5,751, or even of Armissan (from 1,529 to 1,488). On the other hand, towns like Sallèles-d'Aude (+ 207 inhabitants in six years), Port-La Nouvelle (+ 278), Ouveillan (+ 263) or even Moussan (+ 239) are among the champions of demography in the surrounding areas. from Narbonne. Moreover, the agglomeration community recorded the arrivals of 5,261 more people between 2015 and 2021, going from 126,983 to 132,244 inhabitants.

One in four Narbonne residents is retired

Like the population in , that of Narbonne is also getting older: 60-74 year olds represented 16.3% of the Narbonne population in 2010, they now increase to 19.5 (going from 8,306 to 11,012). Just like those over 75 whose place in the total percentage changed from 12.2% to 12.7% from 2010 to 2021. More than one in four Narbonnais is retired (15,163).

According to the full INSEE report, among the population aged 15 to 64, which is equal to 33,032 individuals, 56.2% are active, that is to say employed, or 22,913 people on the Narbonne territory.
