The New York Court of Appeals confirmed this Monday, December 30 that Donald opielected for a second term as president of the United States, will pay 5 dollars a author Elizabeth Jean Carroll. The move follows allegations of sexual assault that began in the 1990s and defamation when the matter became public decades later.
In May 2023, a federal court in Manhattan found the former president guilty of assaulting Elizabeth Jean Carroll in a New York department store in 1996. He was convicted of defamation when he revealed the truth in 2019, to write a biography.
Elizabeth Jean Carroll, now 81, called the attack a sexual assault, but the court did not use that term, preferring to charge sexual assault. The court then ordered Trump to pay $2 million for the attack and $2 million for defamation.
“Donald Trump has not provided proof that the court's first decision was wrong”the appeals judges wrote their order, thus upholding the convictions without requiring a new trial.
At the same time, another trial held in January 2024 imposed a larger legal order: $83.3 million for another defamation claim against Elizabeth Jean Carroll. This case is also currently being tried.
