Norwegian chess champion Magnus Carlsen himself has decided to withdraw from the World Rapid Play Championships after being removed from the ninth round due to his jeans, which were deemed to be against the dress code.
The king of chess has decided to alienate the international federation. Multiple champion Magnus Carlsen was removed from a round of the World Rapid Play Championships in New York for wearing jeans, which is against tournament regulations, on Friday December 27. Furious that he was not given until the next day to change his outfit, the Norwegian genius finally decided to leave the entire tournament and therefore not participate in the last two days.
“They can enforce their rules, that’s OK for me. And my answer is OK, so I’m withdrawing. And fuck you“, he reacted on the microphone of Take Take Take, the chess platform that he created. Magnus Carlsen took the opportunity to announce that he would also not participate in the blitz tournament which begins on Monday in the same city, after having also withdrawn from it. “I am too old to take the lead, it has become a question of principle,” he added, saying he was tired of the regulations.
For his clothing that did not comply with the rules of the international federation (FIDE), Magnus Carlsen was also fined $200.
Carlsen, the champion who no longer defends his crown
Known for wanting to shake up the very polite world of chess, the world champion between 2013 and 2023 posted a photo of his outfit of the day on social networks with the simple caption “OOTD” (for “Outfit of the Day”).
In July 2022, he announced that he would refuse to defend his long game title, the most prestigious, at the 2023 World Championship due to lack of motivation and by demanding that the format of the tournament evolve.
