Sales of electric vehicles saw a sharp increase in the final months of 2024, but the real test will come next year with the temporary suspension of government incentives.

As of 1is February, customers, who will come to Quebec dealerships, will only benefit from the federal subsidy ($5,000) for the purchase of a zero-emission vehicle. However, in December, they had access to an incentive from the Roulez Vert program of $7,000 for a total of $12,000. A major difference.
If the government wishes to assess Quebecers’ interest in electric vehicles, it will have a good barometer in front of it. Unless there is a rebate of several thousand dollars from manufacturers, sales could hit a wall in 2025 with the suspension of this program. And many dealers could find themselves with excess inventory and significant financial losses.
As we have observed in several countries around the world or Canadian provinces, customers become rarer when incentives are abolished. Will we see the same situation in Quebec starting in February? It’s very possible.
