This is one of the Netflix series that stood out at the end of the year, especially for the world of video games. She ends 2024 on a high, still being in the top 10 after six consecutive weeks. A critical and public success which, however, does not guarantee financial success.
VI in the top 10 Netflix
Netflix with fanfare at the end of the year! If season 2 of Squid Game, recently available, is on everyone’s lips (especially since a third and final chapter has been made official), it is another in-house production which ends the year in the top 10 of English-speaking television series with a presence of six consecutive weeks since its launch at the beginning of November: this is the second season of Arcane, the animated series set in the universe of League of Legends produced by Riot and made by the studio French Fortiche.
It not only achieved audience success but was also a critical success. This is evidenced by its ratings on the review aggregator site specializing in television production. RottenTomatoes : the second and final season and displays a press validation rate of 100% (33 reviews) and 89% for the public (more than 2,500 evaluations). All agree that this final chapter is far-reaching in scope, moves at a breakneck pace, and is a satisfying end to an epic saga.
Arcane season 2: a critical and public success but not commercial
Indeed, despite its defeat against the television series Fallout at the Game Awards 2024 in the best video game adaptation category, Arcane is considered a model to follow when it comes to transposing a video game universe onto the small screen.. Something which allows it to have excellent popularity with regular players who ask for more and can even constitute a gateway for neophytes: the universe of Runeterra is not limited to League of Legends since other games have been developed but also published by Riot.
However, and also despite the rave reviews, Arcane did not meet with financial success. According to Bloomberg, the Netflix series would show a deficit of $150 million and would have cost Riot $250 million. If some consider on this subject that Arcane was produced to generate income (via micro-transactions) on League of Legends, it is the co-founder of Riot Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill who explains:
These people think we do things like Arcane to sell skins, when in reality we sell skins to do things like Arcane. Riot is a mission-driven company, where Rioters are constantly striving to improve the lives of players. This is why we have managed to do this again and again in many games and now in multiple companies/media – games, sports, music and animation. Are we getting everything right? No not at all. But we’re not focused on extracting short-term profits – we’re focused on delivering exceptional value to our audiences over the long term, over and over and over again.
He ends by summing up with a simple sentence: Arcane was a hit for the players, and therefore a hit for us. There, for now, it’s difficult to prove him wrong.
